Allison: “I’m pregnant.”
Jack: “How?”
Allison: “The usual way.”
Jack: “I got the drill. So… So, it’s…”
Allison: “Nathan’s.”

******

Jack’s heart stops when she actually says the words, the same cold pit of panic that hit him when Abby sprung the same news on him on a rainy night 17 years ago that he was going to be a father well before he was ready to be.

Oh. Fuck.

Not again.

The baby could be either of theirs, although his gut tells him it’s probably Nathan’s. He knew all along that Ali and Nathan were alone together more often than he was with them, especially given the impending wedding, but there had been more than one night spent recently enough in their arms that he could be the father too.

His mind is suddenly a panicked swirl of memories and emotions, freezing on the moment that he first held Zoe in his arms, dirty, wriggling and screeching, and the overwhelming rush that came knowing that this was his baby girl, his responsibility and now the most important thing in his life. The warm feeling from that moment starts to thaw the cold pit in his stomach, and right then and there he knows he’ll raise Ali’s baby too, no matter if it’s his or Nathan’s. This time, he’ll do it right.

He has to know but can’t even bring himself to say Nathan’s name, and the sad smile that Ali gives him tells him more than he ever needed to know. She’s handled Nathan’s death better than he has in every way, and now she’s even more amazing if she was dealing with hormones on top of it. He does feel bad for his weakness, his lack of control when it comes to anything to do with Nathan, but he knows it’s all going to be too raw for him for a very long time to come.

All he can do now is be here for Ali, however she wants. With Lexi’s and now Ali’s pregnancy, he can focus on the children and keeping the town from destroying itself. Guilt and regret still twists at him for a lot of things, but most of all because instead of staying with Ali, keeping her close like Nathan would have wanted, they’ve barely even done more than have dinner together. He’s sorry for that, because Ali deserves better than this, better than him. And so does Nathan’s memory.

Nathan was the lynchpin of the whole crazy thing, the one so completely convinced that they could and did fit together perfectly. It was Nathan who loved them both so fiercely that he couldn’t live without having them both, and took infinite patience and planning to convince them both that this was the right thing for them all. He knew that Nathan believed down to his last atom that someday Ali and Jack would see things his way, and feel the same as he did.

Loving Ali wasn’t a hardship for Jack-- beautiful, commanding, strong, smart with a body that he could spend forever luxuriating in and a gentle touch that she used in so many ways to make him melt. She seemed equally attracted to him, and Nathan was always so pleased to watch them together, always telling them that one day they’d feel just like he did.

Jack just never could get past the little voice in the back of his head that said he was just some plaything for the both of them, a third wheel, some extra limb where nothing was needed. Gentle hands and soft lips were always trying to convince him otherwise, but it never completely worked.

He still remembers the sharp contrasts between their touch on that last night, Nathan’s broad hands in very light touches and Ali’s smaller hands smoothing in confident strokes all over him. Lips, tongues and teeth tracing paths all over his body, slow and torturous but so very, very good. Then it was Ali taking him into her hot, wet heat and Nathan thrusting so very slowly from behind at first until he couldn’t remember which way was up and nearly blacked out from the pleasure. For those moments in time, both of them made him feel as if there was nothing more important in the world than him, no GD, no town of crazy people, nothing but them and that bed and their pleasure.

The familiar burning hurt in his chest that lives in his chest whenever he remembers Nathan doesn’t have time to flare up this time because he looks up to see General Mansfield standing at their table. With the General around, Jack has bigger problems to deal with right now than grieving over his dead lover.

He stands to greet the General head on, instinctually defending Ali and himself before the General even starts to speak.

Life goes on, with or without Nathan. But Jack damn well wishes that it was with.

*claps happily for threesome fic* Seems to have gotten more interest since 304. But, so sad, poor Jack! I can really see the way you've played it out, Jack's insecurity and them both being a little lost without Nathan, the mastermind behind the whole thing.

And congrats! You finished!

Thanks. :-)

I've been trying to make it work for a while, but finally got the right image going at the right time. I think 3x04 helped the fandom because of Nathan and Jack's scenes- it looked a lot like Jack wasn't just pining for Ali, and that in some ways Nathan was regretting leaving him behind. There were some slashy bits in 3x03 too.

That's honestly the only way it's come to me so far-- Nathan being the ringleader, convicing them both that it's right. And honestly? I see Nathan and Jack both being the kind that have the hidden insecurites behind the bravado but they've fooled the world by projecting themselves.

I think, however, I broke the fandom with it, considering the radio silence. Ah well, won't be the first time. My OTHER Jack tends to not get much attention, but you would think Jack/Nathan/Ali would ping a lot of people. *shrugs* Hasn't stopped me before, especially with my other Jack.

Yes! I did. :-D My first multipart challenge that I actuallly completed, so I am pleased about that.

The threesome is a hard sell, especially in Eureka, because the triangle in canon was pretty polarizing- you could only support one arm- either you shipped Jack/Ali or you shipped Nathan/Ali. And if you were way out in left field and shipped Jack/Nathan, usually you only shipped one or the other in canon. Plus, you get a lot of people on both sides, slash and het, who get all fussy about "you got het in my slash!"/"you got slash in my het" eeww about their fic. Which I find silly, but there you have it. It's why I'm torn about continuing "Modest Proposal" or not. Plus, there's not really a comm for it on lj, it would end up being just on my journal and maybe fanworks.

And I'm not sure it's just your fic- fandom in general seems to have gotten very quiet and subdued since 304. Not that it was ever the biggest or craziest, but it seems quieter. I'm hoping it'll get a revival somewhere, cuz like I said, quiet.

But I agree, Nathan's totally the ringleader, and they'd all have a lot of issues to work out along the way.

Right. People are very one ship or the other. I've never been so much that way, but I know I'm in the minority.

Plus, you get a lot of people on both sides, slash and het, who get all fussy about "you got het in my slash!"/"you got slash in my het" eeww about their fic.

ROTFL I know that reaction, and that was one of the best descriptions of it I've ever seen.

Nooooooo I want more of that one! :-( I want to know how Nathan masterminded it and how it works out. Even though Jack is going against what he believes because of the whole cheating/marriage thing. Ali texted him because Jack wanted proof that Ali wanted it too, yeah? And backstory and invisible blowjobs and... yeah. Jack/Nathan/Ali works. In a very hot way. Except Jack and Ali are going to be a bit slower on the whole acceptance thing.

Plus, there's not really a comm for it on lj, it would end up being just on my journal and maybe fanworks.

For a threesome, I'd post on my journal, fanworks, [info]eureka_fanfic and [info]eureka_slash. The only one out there who has very strict posting standards is [info]marshal_science, so I tend to steer clear of there with things unless it fits perfectly into their little boxes they insist on.

So killing Nathan broke the fandom? That doesn't suprise me. He had quite the following online. Maybe a revivial when the new season starts up? I'll be mucking about for a while, I think. I go by how my brain works. (Not to mention I've got a couple irons in the fire, including that fic I had you look at. Just that other things keep getting in the way, and now that the challenge is done, that's one less thing in the way.)

I've noticed the new seasons of my shows aren't even as good as a messed up season of Eureka, so that's no good. :-/

And I've done the threesome thing before, (CSI:NY) so I know the characters can't just jump into bed and work. There's wayyyyyyy more that needs to be done and explained before it can be remotely believable, and even then people aren't apt to read it anyway. But there are a few. And sometimes, the story needs to be told in order to get more people to believe it. (Experience)

I haven't even seen S3 episodes. My main link to fandom is marshal_science, and that has become much less so with the latest outbursts of moderator asshattery.

But I do have a few unfinished fics still percolating, so you may see them yet. I'm curious about this "Modest Proposal" and have no memory of reading it. If it's threesome, then please finish! I'd love to read that.

I'm on [info]eureka_fanfic, [info]eureka_tag, [info]eureka_slash and [info]marshal_science. The fandom just isn't that big or active in general, so you have to take what you can get.

Have you tried looking about at Eureka Fanworks? There's good stuff to be found there too.

Oh and "Modest Proposal"? Yeah. Like everything [info]serene_quill writes, it's AWESOME. And it totally needs a sequel.

A Modest Proposal

I wrote it for [info]eureka_tag and I don't think I've gotten links to my stories from the tag challenge up on my journal yet (adds to the to do list). It's completely stand alone, and I hadn't intended to write further on it at all, but I sort of got bit by a bunny and have been running with it to see where it leads and if it's viable.

Very nicely written. It's always hard for me to imagine this threesome working, but you've done a great job selling it here. Really good.^^

Thanks. :-)

They're a hard set of personalites to work with in general, and in that combination near impossible. I've come up with a very specific setup, and I can see the final result, but the path getting there isn't coming to me... Which makes it hard to write. But it'd be a pretty intersting (and hot) way to go with them. Maybe eventually.

And srsly? I am not a gamer AT ALL, and I see your icon and all I can think is Tuckerrr! LOL (RedvsBlue is the best web series EVER)

This story makes me so happy (despite, you know, the depressing subject). You do a great job of showing the gaping hole Nathan has left in their lives, and I love the sense that there's so much more going on with that conversation at the end of Fear to Eternity. Also, an Allison who's put together and in control, but still in love and grieving is wonderful (and way too rare in fic). Lovely story.

Thank you, glad you liked it!

It's always so nice when someone *gets* what you were trying to do with a piece. :-D

Nathan left a gaping hole in their lives -- (and the integrity of the canon of Eureka itself, IMO) and ever since day 1 there has always seemed to be more going on than meets the eye between the Jack/Nathan/Ali triangle.

Ali's really hard for me to read, so I'm glad she comes through well in this one.
